Intersession/Intervention Planning Committee Meeting Minutes

Notes:
·
Reviewed the vision for an effective program. We discussed “measurable results” and had
several questions:
1.
Are there better local indicators of improved student
achievement since ISAT testing does not affect all grade levels?
2.
Is there a way to track individual student success,
since students may be
making academic gains yet still remain in the “warning” or “below standards” category?
·
Discussion regarding the creation of a model
intervention program for students
o
We need a 2-pronged approach – intersession and
on-going
o
Intersession should be a combination of remedial and
enrichment. Those students at risk for
retention would be required to take an academic assistance course and have the
option to take an enrichment course as well
o
Would buildings on the State watch list, receiving
REA monies receive a share of the intervention/intersession monies since their
population is so needy and more needs to be done?
o
Would a standard curriculum be offered across the
district or would teachers be able to be creative, especially in enrichment
offerings? How can we minimize competition
among buildings?
o
Who will staff the positions during
intersession? Will we find teachers or
will we need to utilize permanent subs or others?
o
How will we pay for both options?
o
Are there places that are currently operating
successful intervention programs to visit?
o
Secondary (high school) students would be more
likely to seek help during the school day rather than outside the school day or
on Saturdays.
o
Should parents/students (secondary) be surveyed as
to best time for receiving help and intersession participation possibility?
o
Some of the buildings are currently using PE/Music
teachers to provide “during school” interventions. How will this practice be impacted by a realignment of personnel?
o
The high school would prefer to spend intervention dollars
on a reading teacher to work with below grade level readers during the school
day as an elective.
o
How much money is there to spend between
intersession/intervention (on going)?
How will the money be allocated?
Funding will have an impact on our final offerings.
