Minutes:
·
Funding
Formula: The team reviewed
possible funding allocation formulas for academic intervention and discussed
alternatives. It was decided that a
similar formula would be used for academic intervention funding that is used
for allocating supply budgets to buildings (since this was already common practice
and takes into account low income, etc.).
The committee would like Mr. Oberhouse to re-work the numbers to reflect
a similar formula. Jay will talk with
Mike to seek his assistance in completing this task.
·
Intervention
Proposal: The committee
reviewed and edited a draft intervention application to be completed by
buildings in order to access funding for academic intervention
programming. It was noted that instead
of using the word “application” it would be better to replace the word with
“proposal”. Elementary building
principals will be reviewing the form and providing feedback at the December 14th
Elementary principal meeting.
·
Articles/Best
Practices: Each member
present was given an article on “after school intervention programs” to
review. These articles reflect some
“best practices” and research on effective intervention programs for
students. Each team member who
received an article will email Jay (by next Monday/12-10-01) a brief summary
and highlights of the article.
This information will be shared with the building principals next week.
·
Site
Visitations: Members present
also agreed to contact another district to find out what others are doing to
provide academic intervention for students.
The team hopes to collect several models to be able to present to
building administrators. Ultimately,
each building will make a proposal on how it would use funds to provide
academic intervention to students. The
following individuals have agreed to find out more about what’s happening in
other districts:
o Scott
McKissick- will talk with Davenport, Bettendorf & Pleasant Valley schools
o Rick Loy-
will talk with Sheila Wildermuth and Ken Jaeke about what types of activities
they are providing through the 21st century grant
o John
Freiden- will talk with Moline schools
o Pete
Nyman- will talk with East Moline schools
o Darryl
Taylor- will talk with Moline schools
o Diana
Allen- will talk with Davenport schools
After discovering what’s
happening in other districts or buildings, each person should write a brief summary
and highlights to be shared with the rest of the group. Ideally, this would be completed by next
Wednesday, 12-12-01 and sent to Jay.
·
Activities that will occur at the elementary principal
meeting on Friday, 12-14-01:
o Principals
will review funding formula
o Principals
will read through the draft “proposal for academic intervention programming”
o Highlights
from the articles read committee members will be shared with the group
o Principals
will work in teams to provide further feedback and ideas about how to deploy
academic intervention strategies in buildings.
Specifically, teams will address the following questions?
§
Describe a model that could realistically be implemented in
your building to provide academic intervention for students at risk of failing.
(Given: an hour a day, before or after
school, 3 days a week)
§
Describe an effective intersession model of academic
intervention (that would take place during the spring intersession for one
week, 3-4 hours per day)
§
Describe effective instructional strategies that should be
deployed during academic intervention activities.
