Material Evaluation - December 12, 2001

Minutes

Reviewed the “science materials selection evaluation rubric” to all committee members

• Explained the process for material evaluations to all committee members
• Discussed location of materials and format for evaluation
• Reviewed and clarified the evaluation instrument

Reviewed science curriculum materials (Individually and by Grade Level)

• Individuals evaluated science curriculum materials using the evaluation rubric
• Teams discussed and recorded summative evaluation and comments using the appropriate form
• Teams combined individual rating forms, discussed and came to consensus on a final evaluation score for each different vendor.

Scoring and evaluation summaries by grade level

K-3 Elementary

q The K-3 elementary team reviewed several different materials. Two different series scored higher according to the evaluation summative forms: Houghton-Mifflin and McGraw Hill.

4-6 Elementary

q The 4-6 elementary team reviewed several different materials. Two different series scored higher according to the evaluation summative forms: Houghton-Mifflin and McGraw Hill. There was also interest expressed in learning more about the Foss science kits.

Middle School

q Middle school staff reviewed available materials and selected the Holt program and Glencoe materials (Moline has just adopted this series) provided by Amy Sangren for publisher presentations.

High School

q High school biology materials were reviewed by Lori and Courtney. The chemistry, physics and biology materials were transported to Rocky for review by the entire department. We will meet at Rocky during the last week in January. Publishers will be identified for product presentations at that time.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 30^th from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Hauberg Center (this meeting was added). Elementary staff will hear presentations from McGraw Hill, Houghton-Mifflin and Foss. Middle School staff will hear presentations from Holt and Glencoe. An agenda for the next meeting will follow after the holidays.

· February 21st 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
