Subject:      Elementary Science Materials Adoption Update!

Science Committee,

Thanks for all your efforts yesterday in further reviewing science materials for adoption in our District.

As per our discussion yesterday, two elementary science programs were clearly identified by you as "preferable" for our district- McMillan/McGraw-Hill and Delta Education's FOSS.  We are in the process of having additional science materials from these companies sent to the schools for further review by you and the rest of the staff in your building.  I contacted McGraw-Hill today and spoke with their representative who asked for a name at each building to send the sample materials to.  Therefore, below is a list that I faxed today.  If your name is not listed below and you are a member of the science curriculum committee, please assist the process at your school in any way you can.  If your name is on the list below, materials (k-6) will be sent to you by next week.  FOSS has been contacted today and more information will be sent out soon on the status of receiving FOSS materials.  If your name is listed below, please help us out by doing the following:

1.)  Talk with your principal about the best way to communicate with the staff regarding the progress of the science committee and inform them that we are in the final review stages of materials.

2.)  When the materials arrive, distribute the materials to the appropriate grade level teachers.

3.)  Ask teachers to spend some time reviewing the materials and provide you with some feedback.

4.)  Record the teachers' feedback and collect the science materials after all teachers have had an opportunity to review them.

5.)  At your school, get consensus on which materials they thought were the best match for your building (and the district)- McMillan/McGraw-Hill or FOSS.

6.)  Come prepared to represent your building's thoughts on the science materials adoption at the February 21st science meeting.

I will soon be sending out yesterday's meeting minutes and science material evaluation comments.  Please contact me if further clarification is needed.  Thanks to all of you for your efforts.
